Winter is here, and community cats need warm, dry spaces to stay safe. Building a community cat house gives stray, feral, lost, or abandoned cats safe shelter from the cold, wind, and wet weather.

This specific construction of winter cat houses allows the cats to stay dry by using a Styrofoam pad at the bottom, coupled with multiple layers of straw providing an insulating layer, encased by plastic which shelters from moisture and wind.

Meet Pierre, Andre, Francois, Jacques, Jean Claude, Juliette, Louie, Mirabelle, and Pascal: nine tiny puppies whose lives depended on urgent action.

Bringing the One Health Approach to Life at Columbus Humane

This June, we were proud to bring a powerful vision to life at Columbus Humane’s Essential Care Center on South High Street—home to our Low-Cost Veterinary Clinic and Pet Food Pantry. In a day centered on compassion, collaboration, and community care, we launched a special initiative rooted in the One Health approach.

At Columbus Humane, our Humane Agents see firsthand how the summer heat and holiday celebrations can quickly turn dangerous for our four-legged neighbors. With July 4 just around the corner, we’re asking our community to take a few simple steps to protect pets from heat, fear, and potential harm.

Whether you're planning a cookout, heading out to watch fireworks, or just enjoying time in the sun—here’s how to keep pets safe and comfortable all summer long. 

Bella, a 6-year-old beagle-mix came to us in need of both medical care and a second chance. Her journey not only led to healing and a loving new home—it became a hands-on teaching moment for Ohio State University veterinary students during their shelter medicine rotation.
